As we mark International Day for Biodiversity, we’re thrilled to share some exciting updates on our ongoing conservation efforts at Thames Valley Park. Over the past year, our dedicated team has been hard at work implementing our five-year ecological management plan to preserve and enhance #biodiversity at the park, and the results speak for themselves.

Here are some highlights from our recent monitoring efforts:
🌱 Maintained Habitat Diversity: Despite no new plant species recorded in 2023, our botanical species diversity and habitat quality have been successfully maintained. The establishment of perennial species in the newly created grasslands, such as meadow clary and red campion, demonstrates the positive transition towards more stable and diverse ecosystems.

🦆 Thriving Bird Populations: We’re delighted to report an increase in bird species diversity, with a total of 72 species recorded in 2023. This includes notable sightings of wintering species like shoveler ducks and teal, as well as resident breeders like Cetti’s warbler and kingfisher. While challenges like extended flooding impacted breeding for some species, our habitat management strategies continue to support a rich avian community.

🦋 New Invertebrate Discoveries: The discovery of the demoiselle damselfly, along with increases in dragonfly species, underscores the importance of our habitat preservation efforts for supporting diverse invertebrate populations. Additionally, sightings of previously unrecorded butterfly species like the holly blue and small copper further highlight the success of our conservation initiatives.

🌊 Emerging Wildlife Sightings: Excitingly, our ecological surveys have revealed the presence of otters for the first time on site, signaling the positive impact of our habitat management practices on local wildlife populations.

These achievements wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of our team and the support of our community. As we look ahead, we remain committed to balancing leisure amenities with nature conservation, ensuring Thames Valley Park continues to thrive as a vibrant ecosystem. Happy International Day for Biodiversity! 🌿🦋🌎
